Totally agree. Although the Athenians had slaves, they had civics and philosophy. Monks have intrinsic motivations. Academia, the Arts, parenting — so many things that don’t focus on making money, but that provide us with purpose, structure and community. My point is that there are also many examples of affluent countries or even many parts of the US where you end up with a kind of “Wayne’s World” where people have to create their own trouble in order to find something to do. I’m not super-pessimistic, but I that taking work away from many people will create a vacuum that we need to be thought about how to fill. I wrote about it a bit here:
